We provide detailed empirical evidence of a direct effect of air pollution on the efficient operation of the New York Stock Exchange, linking short-term variations in fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in Manhattan to movements in the S&P 500. December 5, 2016. When New York is enveloped in pollution, the stock market loses value and sends a negative signal to global markets, a new paper finds. The issue: Air pollution is bad for our lungs, for children’s health and development, and for the global climate. The relationship becomes weaker as the distance of the stock exchange from the polluted area increases. The results also indicate that air pollution may even affect local traders investing in securities exchanges located far from the polluted area. The findings imply that a profitable trading strategy can be constructed.
